Why breathwork facilitators need real training

Alexis Alcalá on the risks of weekend certifications in breathwork and bodywork, and what proper facilitator training should include.

Breathwork has grown fast. So have short certifications. You can now become a "facilitator" in a weekend. I take a clear position on this: breath and body work can bring up strong physical and emotional responses, and leading other people through them is a responsibility.

A weekend is not enough to learn screening, contraindications, trauma-informed holding, consent around touch, and what to do when a session goes somewhere unexpected.

At InnerCamp our trainings are hybrid: an onsite intensive where you practise and are observed, followed by a longer online part where you keep practising and get feedback. That is how real skill forms, through repetition and supervision, the way an apprenticeship works.

If you are choosing a training, ask: How long is it? How much supervised practice is included? Is safety taught as a module or as the foundation? The answers will tell you a lot.
